Margaret, a solitary career woman, eagerly anticipates meeting Colin, a man she met online. However, just hours before their meeting, a phone call from a friend leads her to a nearby cemetery, where she is shocked to discover Colin’s photo on another man’s grave. Could Colin be who he says he is?

As the sun shines through her windows, casting a warm glow on the immaculate furniture, Margaret tidies her home, reflecting her structured, disciplined life. Every corner is neat, every item in place. Cleaning has become a comforting ritual, a way to fill the emptiness in her life.

Having dedicated herself to work, Margaret had been independent from a young age. By nineteen, she was living alone, working two jobs to fund her education. By twenty-five, she was building a career as a restaurant manager, saving for her own business. By forty-five, she had achieved success—a thriving restaurant, a beautiful home, and a nice car.

But despite all her accomplishments, happiness had evaded her. Margaret had always assumed that once her career was established, starting a family would follow naturally. But when she realized she wanted a family, it was too late. She had little experience with men and even less in nurturing a family. At work, her position intimidated men, and although she was respected, she was also seen as unapproachable. Finding a partner at forty-five proved far more difficult than she’d ever anticipated.

While cleaning, Margaret’s phone buzzed with a message from Colin. Their online conversations had been deep and quick to develop—discussions about books, movies, food, and their shared perspectives on the world. They had so much in common, but Colin lived in another city, and they had never met in person.

Margaret had lied about her age, telling Colin she was thirty instead of forty-five, fearing he might reject her if he knew the truth. She never imagined their relationship would progress this far, but now she was ready to meet him. Nervously, she messaged him: “Colin, we’ve been talking for over a month now, and I really want to meet you.”

She anxiously awaited his reply, repeatedly checking her phone, feeling frustrated. Finally, his response came: “That’s a great idea, Margaret. I want to meet too, but I have nowhere to stay in the city. I don’t like staying in hotels.” Without thinking, she quickly replied, “No problem, stay with me!”

She realized her offer might be misunderstood, but Colin responded quickly: “Great, I’ll arrive tomorrow evening. I can’t wait to meet you!”

Everything was set. Margaret was overwhelmed with emotions—happy, yet scared. The lie about her age weighed heavily on her, and she feared Colin would leave when he discovered the truth.

The next day, Margaret prepared her home meticulously, cleaning every inch and cooking Colin’s favorite meals. As the evening approached, her excitement and nerves grew. Just as she was about to relax, her phone rang. It was Alice, a colleague, calling with an urgent request.

“I’m sorry to bother you, Margaret, but my car is stuck nearby,” Alice said, sounding distressed. Margaret, knowing Alice had been dealing with the loss of her husband, Nathan, didn’t hesitate. “I’ll be there in ten minutes,” she reassured her.

Arriving at the scene, Margaret quickly helped Alice with the car, pulling it out of the ditch with ease. Once done, Alice broke down in tears, unable to hold in her emotions. Margaret comforted her, offering a hug and kind words.

Alice, still overwhelmed, asked Margaret to accompany her to Nathan’s grave. “Would you walk with me? I can’t do it alone,” Alice sobbed. Margaret agreed and walked with her, offering silent support.

As they passed a grave, Margaret froze in shock. There, on a nearby tombstone, was a photo of Colin. It was the same image from his online profile. Margaret’s heart raced. Could it be him?

Her hands shaking, she quickly messaged Colin: “Hi, is everything still on for today?” His reply came immediately: “Yes, of course, I’ll be there at eight!” Margaret’s mind raced with confusion. What did this mean?

After reassuring Alice and promising to return later, Margaret rushed home, her thoughts a whirlwind. She had to meet Colin, but now she was filled with doubt and fear. As she waited by the door, she noticed a car pull up. A man stepped out holding a bouquet of flowers. But when Margaret saw his face, it wasn’t the man from the photos.

Panic set in as the man rang the doorbell. Margaret hesitated, hiding behind the door. Finally, he spoke: “I know you’re inside, Margaret. I’m sorry. I don’t look like the man in the photos.”

Margaret’s heart pounded. She opened the door, and Colin quickly apologized. “I’m sorry for the deception. I just wanted to meet you so badly.”

Inside, Margaret asked, “Why did you lie about your appearance?” Colin admitted that he had created a fake profile with a handsome photo because he was afraid no one would like the real him. He had been too anxious to show his true self.

Margaret softened, confessing that she, too, had lied about her age. Colin reassured her, “Age doesn’t matter to me. You’re beautiful, and I’m just glad we’re meeting now.”

They both chuckled, realizing how much they had in common, and agreed that they should start fresh, no more lies. Margaret invited him to dinner, and they shared an honest and genuine connection. The uncertainty faded, replaced by hope for something real and lasting.
